4. The average annual rainfall in the region must be between 50 and 70 inches (127 – 177 centimeters).

5. The area must be between 500 and 1500 feet (150 – 457 meters) above sea level.

6. The coffee tree must be planted in rich volcanic soil.  It cannot grow in any other type of soil or it will develop a different taste profile that does not meet the standards required for Kona Coffee.

There are many Kona Coffee farms throughout the region on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Some of them are small and some are large, some run by families and others run as businesses.    A lot of this coffee is organic, but not enough to meet certification requirements.

Kona beans can be purchased online or at many grocery stores throughout the U.S., but it is important that you carefully read the label.  Not all Kona coffees are created equal, as we’ll soon show you.

In 1828 a man named John Wilkinson was shipwrecked off of the Big Island of Hawaii.  The natives helped him and he told King Kamehameha I about his plight. He says that if anyone finds his longboat, which is what the natives called it, to return it because this would ensure safe passage for future sailors and traders.

King Kamehameha, I took the longboat and renamed it “ka Puno o Kona,” or the “Kona Night Watchman.”  This boat was used to ensure that everyone was safe and peaceful while they were asleep at night.

Many people ask this question, but there isn’t really a good answer.  It’s different for everyone who asks, so the answer varies depending on what you are looking for out of your cup of coffee.

Then you should look at how it was processed after being harvested.  Almost all Kona coffees are wet-processed, which means water is used to separate the flesh of the cherry from the beans before it is dried.  Some Kona coffees are also wet-hulled which means the skin of the bean is removed after being wet-processed instead of before, making them easier to roast because they can be dried without removing their skin.
